The present popularity of Red Delicious apples has been a growing phenomenon since their introduction in 1893. The story goes that when Clarence Stark tasted one of the entries in an apple competition that year, he exclaimed, “Delicious!” and, on the spot, determined that would be a most appropriate name for the remarkably tasty fruit he had just sampled.
