I speak now of the presidency.
Two years ago, in 1796, I was honored to be elected vice president to president John Adams. I am, therefore, closer to the presidency. It is an office the term of which was subject of much controversy during the constitutional convention of which I was a part. Estimates of a proper term varied from a kingly presidency for life to just a few years before we settled on successive four-year terms. We then faced the momentous decision as to how to provide for premature termination of a presidency. It was a necessary subject. It troubled us greatly to prepare for an outcome we considered most unlikely.
