Two elderly women
run scam operation
Antique store owners should beware according to the Rappahannock Sheriff’s Office.
Two elderly women went into an antique store in Washington, Va. last week and told the proprietor they were needlepoint instructors from New Mexico. One of the women, it t was reported, had a Canadian accent. A conversation ensued and the women said they had a rug in the car, that they had used in classes on needlepoint which they taught, and they would be interested in selling it.
They brought the rug in, reached an agreement with the proprietor and sold it for $600. After they left the proprietor discovered a tag on the back of the rug, that had been marked out with magic marker, which read “Made in China.” A stop payment was put on the check given to the women but they had already cashed it.
The sheriff’s office has alerted other businesses here and in Culpeper County about the scam.
An ornamental copper kettle, dating to the early 1800s and valued at $4,000, was taken from a lot off Route 622, Rock Mills Road month. The owner, whose identity is not being released due to the ongoing investigation, is in the process of building a home on the lot and had stored the antique kettle in what was termed a “well hidden place” by Lt. Larry Sherertz of the sheriff’s office. The larceny occurred prior to Sept. 19.
