is a founding member of the Smithson String Quartet and the Castle TVio. She is a professor of violin at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Steven Dann is principal viola with the Tbronto Symphony. As a soloist, he has performed with orchestras throughout Canada and Europe.
“The Brilliance of the Baroque” concert on Oct. 11, at 3:30 p.m., includes works by Telemann, Rameau, Couperin and Bach. Slowik, playing viola da gamba, is joined by five other members of the Smithsonian Chamber Players: Marc Schachman, oboe, Linda Quan, violin, Christopher Krueger, flute, Myron Lutzke, cello and Arthur Haas, harpsichord.
The final two concerts in the four-concert Smithsonian series will be held in the winter-spring season of 1999, on Jan. 24 at 3:30 p.m. and May 15 at 8 p.m. The January concert includes a performance of Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 in D Mtyor introduced with a lecture by Slowik on the entire Brandenburg Concertos. The May concert presents Franz Schubert’s best-loved song cycle, “Die Schone Mullerin — The Beautiful Maid of the Mill.”
Tickets for individual concerts are $14 each with reservations, $15 at the door. For the complete series of four concerts, the price is $55. Tickets for students 18 and under are half price. For reservations and information call 675-1253.
