Berman was raised in Washington, D.C. and attended the University of Maryland, where she studied commercial and fine art. An interesting comment she made was that another student in her classes and who often painted at the e&sel next to hers was Jim Henson, who later beCahie famous for his Muppets.

Berman said painting is her love and she hopes to do more soon, but the intensity of her busy life frequently keeps her from it. She and her husband maintain two residences, one in Washington, D.C. and one near Rock Mills. Between visiting and helping her 94year-old mother in Washington, D.C., she and her husband Harold travel to visit their six children, who live scattered throughout the U.S. They have traveled extensively throughout the world, even going to Antarctica, and they try to visit a country they have never seen each year.
