The system, if approved by the town council, would begin at each resident’s house with wastewater flowing a septic tank by gravity. Critzer said the town would probably require a partial gravity and partial pump system which was included in the estimated price.
The effluent from the septic tanks would flow through a filter and then by gravity to the recirculation tank. Pumps then would force the effluent intermittently onto sequential sand filters 24 hours each day, seven day each week. The effluent would trickle through the black sand where it would be treated by naturally occurring microorganisms that populate the filter. After passing through the sand filter, the effluent would be collected at the bottom in a fourinch diameter pipe and would be sent to a recirculation valve, which would return it to the recirculating tank. Finally, the treated water would be sent to a drain field.
The next step is an engineering study, said Critzer, who also was favorably impressed with the system and the Ashco-A-Corporation.
