The Healthy Families program started over 20 years ago in Hawaii and has been shown to have a major impact in supporting new parents. A group has been meeting in Rappahannock for the last year planning to start the program here.
This voluntary program evaluates new parents to find those who will benefit from additional support as they start raising their children. The initial emphasis is on first-time parents and the major effort is providing one-on-one parenting education in the home. Community resources are used whenever possible and services are individualized to meet the needs and desires of the parents.
This is a private project, and although some grant funding is available, this group has not been able to secure enough funding to actually start providing services. Donations and office space are being sought to begin providing services as soon as possible.
