services for as long as five years. Visits are initially at least weekly although the frequency can decrease as families develop their own resources. The program places a heavy emphasis on child development, but many of the services are customized for each family.
A review of existing data shows that there has been a great change in family structure leading to numerous concerns. In the state of Virginia the percentage of families with children headed by a single parent has risen from 20 percent in 1985 to 29 percent in 1996.
In Rappahannock County 26.2 percent of all births were to single mothers in 1997. The percent of low birth weight babies delivered to Rappahannock mothers has risen from six percent in 1993 to 10.8 percent in 1997.
The cost of providing the Healthy Families program to one family for one year is about $3,000 but the benefits last not only the lifetime of the child, but when those children become parents they will have a better foundation for their own parenting.
