Ragged Mountain activity

Ragged Mountain Resource Center in Sperryville is sponsoring the following activity and more* information may be obtained by calling the center at 987-3366.

Wednesday, Dec. 22: Winter Solstice Moonlight Hike of Old Rag Mountain, meet at Mountainside Market on U.S. 211 west of Sperryville between 4-4:30p.m„ return ?. Bring food for self, layered clothing and a small flashlight in case of cloud cover. This is a strenuous hike under somewhat tricky conditions, so inexperienced hikers are not encouraged to participate. Hike leader: Hunt Harris, 987-3366.

Presentation open to public

On Jan. 12, Ms. Charlene Sajonas from the University qf Virginia financial aid office will be at Liberty High School from 7 to 9 p.m. to talk about all aspects of financial aid. This presentation is free to the public. For more information call Sue Harmon at 439-4223 or 439-4224.

Kick-off meeting scheduled i

The kick-off meeting for this year’s Relay for Life will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 25 at 7:30 p.m. at the Flint Hill fire hall. Team captains and prospective captains will find this meeting very useful according to Mrs. Ester Settle, one of the relay’s principle organizers. For more information call Mrs. Settle at 675-3252.

DMV Offices close for holidays

All Department of Motor Vehicles customer service centers will close at noon Thursday, Dec. 23 and remain closed through Saturday, Dec. 25 in observance of the holiday season. They will open statewide for business as usual Monday, Dec. 27.

In addition, they will be closed Friday, Dec. 31 through Monday, Jan. 3 in observance of the New Year’s holidays.

Number Y2K information

Residents seeking information on Y2K issues or problems can call the Virginia Y2K Public Information Line toll-free. The telephone number is 1-888-200-0258.

The phone line will be in operation from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. daily until Dec. 30, the Virginia Department of Emergency Services said. Starting Dec. 31, New Year’s Eve, the phone line will operate around the clock at least through 5 p.m. on Jan. 4, 2000.

The number is being provided to answer questions from the public about Virginia’s Y2K concerns and any problems that could occur during the rollover to the New Year.

Fund drive underway at Chester Gap

The Chester Gap Volunteer Fire Department is having a special fund drive for the next several weeks in cooperation with Community Support Services. Families will be contacted by phone and asked to make a pledge. Each family that pledges receives a beautiful 10x13 canvas mount portrait, compliments of the fire department.
