The animal
shelter is not
the answer

The Rappahannock County animal shelter might seem like the perfect place to find a puppy for Christmas. But if this is the intention, a pet shop or breeder would be the answer. When screening their applicants for adoption, one of the shelter’s considerations is how well the entire adoptive family and the animal relate to one another.
The adoption coordinator, Patti Want, says, “We don’t adopt dogs out as gifts. The whole family has to come down to meet the dog. We have to be sure. We want people who have been thinking about getting a dog in general. We have to meet the whole family. We check the references before they go out.”
