Over the past few weeks the Maazel’s Chateauville Foundation presented two “open to the community” events featuring students from the Foundation supported Hearthstone Whole Family Learning Center in Castleton. Guests were treated to a stage adaptation of Erich Kastner’s “Emil and the Detectives” performed by a largely lower school cast, and to a Christmas Concert showcasing the energies, if not emerging talents, of lower and upper school students in song, dance, and with piano, cello, and violin, recorder, and clarinet.
It is always a treat to attend any performance in the Theater—it is a monument to the arts and to the benevolence of its patrons. It is also, however, the manifestation, along with the Hearthstone school and school children, of the Chateauville Foundation’s motto: “We nurture children, foster art, and reclaim the human spirit.” . The children performed admirably and, in fact, some sang or acted or danced or played their instruments with a sensitivity and maturity that belied their ages, while some performed as one might expect a child to perform.
