1856, Thoreau wrote about the white-breasted nuthatch: "... it was like a very busy man talking to himself.” The nuthatch in our yard here in Flint Hill talks to himself constantly. After reading Thoreau, I realize nothing in the world of birds has changed except — in some cases — their numbers.
On the occasion of a decision to write about a bird, I go to this book first. There are always insights and illuminations on birds from more than a century ago.
Did I not already possess these books, they would be welcome as gifts at any time, Christmas or otherwise.; Admittedly, this column is a bit too close to Dec. 25 to be of use to any except the last-minute shopper.
