We scoured around for awhile, then went a little further south trying to locate the Dave Kendall site. We were not so lucky this time, as we’d either gone too far up the side of the hill or too low.
Near by was Spion Kop (sic), several acres of orchard and farm land. The name Spion Kop comes from the mountainous area in Africa where several battles of the Boer War were fought. Hube V. Hudson had owned this place. He resided most of the time in Luray where he owned and operated a hardware store.
Here at Spion Kop was his family summer home. A daughter of Hube Hudson was Pearl who married a Mr. Berry, a lawyer from Luray. Pearl was Elmo Abbott's home room teacher in 1938 and 1939. A tragic accident occurred some years ago where this same Mr. Berry and two of his in-laws by the name of Hudson all drowned in the Shenandoah.
