Sunday, Oct. 31, I met cousin Elmo Abbott from RileyVille, Page County, Virginia at Panorama. From here we drove north on Skylihe Drive to the Elkwallow Wayside.
Our goal was to locate the John and . Dave Kendall properties (house sites). It had been over 60 years since Elmo had been down in the hollow to the east of the Drive. This upper end of the hollow, however, he explained was part of the Dr. Edward Brumback property which had joined his grandfather, John Kendall’s.
Due to the cattle industry in the area, many of the old apple trees or orchards were cut down so as to both clear the land and prevent the cattle from getting choked on the apples. Mr. Luther Tatum and Floyd Huffman cut down or deadened many apple trees on the old Brumback place.
Jim Huffman who was from the area had gone to Stafford county for awhile. It 'seems the economy of the area pressed the men folk to seek a living often times far from their homes. Such being the case during and shortly after the Great Depression, before the coming of Roosevelt s New Deal.
During this administration the Shenandoah National Park had its beginnings, as well as the start up of the CCC, an off shoot of the new deal. Having made friends with Charles Wellington "Charlie" Payne, the two men made their way up to the mountains. Jim Huffman shortly thereafter met and married a Miss Presgraves from the Jeremiah's Run area,
