out and settlements made, David Kendall was then the owner. David Kendall had bought this tract of land from Isaiah Dwyer and wife in October 1897, for which see Deed Book X, page 283 in Rappahannock County records. The description in the deed reads as follows:
Adjoining the lands of John Waters, Sarah C. Judd and J.W. Kendall, known as the Edward Bolen tract of land lying on east side of Naked Mountain containing 65 acres. The line between this tract and the J.W. Kendall tract was shown by the tenant residing on the tract.
Improvements at the time the Park came included a six room frame dwelling one and half story with a metal roof, partly ceiled and in good condition.
Elmo and I left, retracing our steps back up the hollow toward Elkwallow. Planning to return later making the Thornton Hollow Trail route at that time.
All the above sounds pretty boring and dull to someone who had no roots or any other interest in this section of the park. Yet, as we descended on the first leg of our hike, Elmo related what he remembered and what his mother, Minnie Kendall Abbott had told him. Adding, as it were, color and character to an otherwise uninteresting search.
