DUI, the charge of driving under the influence of alcohol, can cost a Virgi nia driver more than $4,000 in legal expenses and can result in as much as a 50 percent increase in auto insurance premiums annually, says David J. Skove, Virginia general manager of the Progressive Auto Insurance companies.
“Conviction on drunken driving is always a very regrettable and expensive experience,” says Mr. Skove, whose company, sixth-largest in the state, insures 140,000 Virginia drivers. “It is one of the most dangerous, antisocial behaviors one can commit behind the wheel. It can ruin your life, disgrace your reputation and deplete your finances, to say nothing of the harm an^ misery that can be inflicted on innocent lives.”
It’s something to keep in mind during the holiday party season, he urges.
