print, but it regularly turns up in secondhand book stores and is well worth the search. For bedside reading, it can’t be beat. There is an essay on some aspect of the natural world for every day of the year. This book would be the perfect gift for anyone who loves and enjoys nature.
For the lover of trees (there are many, I meet them frequently), the same author’s “A Natural History of Trees of Eastern and Central North America” would be a perfect gift. Out of print for a number of years, it is now again available in a handsome softback edition.
Peattie’s essays on trees are rich, full-length portraits combining botanical and cultural history, folklore, ecology and anecdotes. When I determine to write on a tree for these columns, this is my first source of inspiration and information. ^
A few years ago, I acquired a book entitled “Thoreau on Birds.” It is a compilation of notes on birds from the diaries of America’s philosopher of nature, Henry David Thoreau.
