“Safety is the key issue here,” he says, “but sometimes people need to see it in tenps of dollars and cents. If they know how a DUI hits them in the wallet, maybe people will think twice before having one more cocktail.”
DUI arrests in the Old Dominion dropped by 1.5 percent between 1997-1998, according to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, from 30,473 to 30,012. Last year, alcohol figured in 336 traffic deaths, or 36 percent of highway fatalities.
