Using a mini-helicopter, with a remotely controlled videocamera strapped to its body, is another way. With its rotor-span of close to ten feet; weighing about 140 pounds, and having a range of six miles, the mini-helicopter could film the county without disturbing anyone. Again, this is a commonly used device to record how things look from the air. It has been used to monitor traffic, check on the environment, get to inaccessible places, etc.
Obviously, filming the county from the air is not free. Preliminary estimates run about $12,000 to $15,000. But such a one-time cost to document how Rappahannock County looked in the Year 2000 might be worth it. Possibly a joint-effort by a number of county organizations might fund the project, or an “angel” might appear in the form of a patron. Filming would be scheduled for summer for maximum greenery or late-fall for the maximum locating of buildings, etc.
