My handy kitchen dictionary defines “flippant”

as “casually disrespectful,” and as my disrespect of the Democratic Party is anything but casual, I am at a loss to understand why Thomas Spande characterizes my letter that \iray. Angry, yes. Scornful, yes. Not flippant.

Flippant is the word I would use to describe the attitude of those Florida voters who, assuming that a Gore victory was inevitable, paid little attention to the mechanics of the actual voting process, and, using equipment no better and no worse than that being used all over the country, conducted themselves with a shameful disregard for the sacrifice of life, fortune, and sacred honor that have made it possible for American citizens to cast free and secret ballots for over 200 years.
