Lt. Col. G.T. Stapp
Bomber Pilot
Lt. Col. Grady T. Stapp of Front Royal died Saturday, Feb. 24 at Warren Memorial Hospital. He was 81.
Lt. Col. Stapp was bom in Louisville, Ala. on June 3, 1920 to Annie Laurie and John W. Stapp. He grew up in Georgia and Florida and moved to Franklin, Thnn. in 1936, where he graduated from Battleground Academy.
He attended Vanderbilt University until being inducted into the Army Air Corps in 1942. Three months before leaving to pilots training, he married his high school sweetheart, Irene Gracey, formerly of Clarksville, Tenn., to whom he was married until his death.
He served as a bomber pilot until the end of World War II and remained on active duty as a reconnaissance pilot and at the Pentagon until 1961, when he retired to civilian life. He worked variously in electronics consulting, entrepreneurship and car sales until retiring.
