New DNA evidence, a deathbed confession, locating an eyewitness who was not available during the original trial . . . evidence that will stop the execution of an innocent man should always be reviewed by the judicial system. The court may find the evidence isn’t compelling, and let the sentence stand.
The purpose of capital punishment is not to execute as many inmates as possible, but to exact appropriate justice on the guilty. It is our responsibility to provide every opportunity in due process for the accused, so that no one but the guilty are executed.
