Rappahannock News Writer - People are sometime surprised to find that their home is “historic” and could be eligible for state or National registration.
Actually, though the guidelines for nominating historic homes was laid out in the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 or by the Virginia Commonwealth; the significance of a structure, site or area is more often a local determination. The only absolute criterion is that it must be at least 50 years old.
Homes, commercial buildings, and even churches and areas can be nominated for formal “historic” designation
