“Titans”, starring Denzel Washington, is the true story of T.C.Williams High School in Alexandria whose football players overcame their racial differences to win the 1971 state football championship. The movie is about the time when forced integration came to the public schools of Alexandria and high school football coach Bill Yoast (Will Patton) finds himself replaced by a black man, Herman Boone (Denzel Washington). And Boone’s once lily-white team is now racially mixed. Yoast and Boone learn to work together, and the military-style discipline that Coach Boone imposes on his players breaks down prejudices and points to a winning season. Director Boaz Yakin and producer Jerry Bruckheimer (“Armageddon”) hammer home their inspirational message with the force of a 400-pound linebacker, in a film that amounts to a weird blend of “Malcolm X”, “Stand and Deliver”, and “Rocky.” The makers of “Remember the Titans” never claimed the film was a documentary, although the film which was made in Atlanta, does include portrayals of actual events and people. Alexandria’s black community really did pressure Boone into taking the head coaching job at T.C. Williams as shown in the movie. Boone says, “I turned down the job at first.”
