snow Cream
You would mix one and a half cups milk (half and half is better) we used cream, one cup sugar, and one tablespoon vanilla. Mix and add food coloring (red or green are best) add snow until you get the correct consistency of ice cream.
The food coloring makes it look pretty and it was cold and sweet. It doesn’t compare to our ice cream products you can purchase today, but it is worth a try.
You were not to eat the first snow, it took the first snow to take the germs out of the air. You would gather the snow when it was several inches deep and being careful to keep it as clean as possible. We would take a big spoon and fill a pan with snow, leaving it outside until we were ready to add it to our liquid mixture.
I invite you to share this experience with your children as I’m sure it’s difficult for them to conceive a time when ice cream was not readily available. I made snow cream for my children and now they’re making it for their children. I think it helps them to understand the times shared by our previous generations.
