It is very difficult under Virginia law to give the death penalty to anyone. Our tight, strict laws are the reason why so few death penalty cases are overturned.
It takes a truly horrific murder compounded with aggravated crimes to draw capital punishment in Virginia. This is as it should be. All questions of deterrence aside, capital punishment is just that — punishment — and should be viewed as a matter of justice.
