These sites provide a base for “heritage tourism” which has proven to be extremely successful way to stimulate local business, gain jobs, and increase local tax revenue. Data suggests historic tourists spend more.
Equally important is that it does so with minimal adverse impact and actually encourages maintaining an area’s unique character. It provides a subtle influence on the style and type of the areas “development” by reinforcing its existing and natural qualities - and acts as a disincentive to “sprawl” type development.
Historic registration can be through the Virginia Landmarks Register or National Register. Applying is a straightforward process; but does require some supporting proof and local support.
