The criminal rights lobby has raised its ugly head again, championing a moratorium on executions.
There can be no doubt that capital punishment is a legitimate price for the kind of heinous murders that draw the death penalty, but there are provisions in Virginia’s legal code that need changing if we are to protect the innocent.
The framers of the United States Constitution envisioned a country in which capital punishment served as an acceptable penalty.
For instance, the Fifth Amendment starts by talking about capital crimes, and finishes with the declaration that no one can “be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law.”
It’s the “due process” part where we can make improvements in Virginia to protect innocent lives.
