This week was quite a season finale for the Rappahannock County Wrestlers as five District medalists traveled to Madison on Saturday, Feb. 24 to compete in the Region B tournament. Fourteen teams representing the three Districts in Region B sent their best wrestlers onto the mat in search of team and individual glory.
When it was all over, Coach Jim Wells’ Panther squad had drawn a mark on the wall for all future RCHS wrestling teams to meet. With only five wrestlers — Senior, Chris Graves; Juniors Johnny Ferdetta and Garner Smythe; and Sophomores, Jeff Scroggins and Jeremy Graves; the Rapp team finished the day in tenth place overall and with two of their grapplers on the way to the State Tournament next week.
All the Panther wrestlers won at least one match in the tournament, with Johnny Ferdetta, Garner Smythe, and Jeremey Graves each finishing sixth overall.
However, the day belonged to Sophomore Jeff Scroggins who came out during his first match of the day and stunned his opponent and the crowd by pinning the number one seed in the second period.
Senior, Chris Graves also won his opening match to set up an opportunity for himself and Scroggins to earn berths in the State Tournament as Region B’s fourth place finishers. Graves at 160 pounds and Scroggins at 189 pounds will travel to Salem, Virginia on Friday, March 2.
The first round of competition will occur on Friday, March 2, with the Championship round on Saturday, March 3.
