Agent for the Rappahannock County office of the Virginia Cooperative Extension Service, provided the Board with a review of the office’s programs and successes. He discussed highlights of the pesticides disposal program, the vineyard and orchard programs, the weed control evaluation program, and the Virginia Premium Assured Heifer Program in the County.
He noted that Rappahannock, with 5558 pounds of pesticides collected, was number one in participation of thirty-three localities in the pesticides disposal program. He discussed Rappahannock’s model vineyard program and its effectiveness, and the program of integrated pest management within the County’s orchard program.
He spoke of the stickweed control tests conducted at Hayland Eldon Farm, and benefits and effectiveness of the premium assured heifer program.
Other activities
• At the beginning of the afternoon session, Supervisor Bob Anderson presented Chairman Pete Estes with a plaque recognizing his “twenty years in the Virginia Association of Counties.”
• The Board approved a resolution of appreciation for Harold Artz of Amissville, who passed away on Saturday, Nov. 3.
• School Superintendent Dr. David Gangel informed the Board that the George Washington Carver/Piedmont Technical School facilities in Culpeper will be “surplused,” if the school’s control board and the School Boards and Boards of Supervisors of the four participating counties agree. Some income should be derived for Rappahannock County once the approvals are obtained and the property is sold.
• Col. D.C. Rnuepfer, Coordinator of Rappahannock County’s Office of Emergency Service, provided information of Rappahannock’s disaster preparedness. He noted that the County is in an alert period, and that the local emergency planning committee is meeting biweekly.
