nicKories, reaDua, serviceberry and maples, or they and other trees and shrubs might appear. It will be ten years or so before you’ve enough shade to start planting the native perennials, but you could be lucky enough that they appear on their own!
Don’t despair if you don’t have any woods or possibility of growing a woods. A couple of large, deciduous shade trees and /or shrubs will provide the habitat for a “mock” wildflower bulb planting. Flowers such as grape hyacinths, daffodils, and scilla will flourish happily. Although not native, they are not without their particular charms. Anywhere you find moss or violets growing under trees will indicate a likely spot for these bulbs.
The English geranium tuberosum looks right at home under trees and shrubs, though slightly different than its native American cousin, geranium maculatum. The European anemone nemerosa may be substituted for the American anemone lancifolia. It is difficult to find the latter commercially, but both anemones enjoy leafy soil in deciduous shade.
Lycoris squamigera, or “Naked Ladies” are often grown in full sun here, but I have planted mine under a large crabapple, where it looks quite convincing as a woodland imposter. Turk’s cap or martagon lily is an Alice in Wonderland creation, bearing as many as 50 pendulous blooms per 4’-6’ stem, and can be found in varying colors from cream to burgundy.
Saving the best for last, cardiocrinum giganteum is the most spectacular woodland bulb I’ve seen. It can reach heights of 10’ and carries numerous fragrant and enormous (12”) white trumpets. Alas, there is a price to pay for such drama: each plant costs about $35 takes 2-3 years to bloom and only reproduces by offsets, as the mother bulb dies after blooming. I do suspect that it must be none other than the Queen of the fairies who lives in this Beauty!
