Veterans' Day is a day set aside in commemoration of the end of hostilities in 1918 and 1945. Nov. 11 is formerly observed as a legal holiday in the United States. Our local high school under the leadership of Principal Joe Perine has announced a theme for the Nov. 11-16 week, “The Price of Freedom". Students will he encouraged to make remarks on any gatherings they may attend on Nov. 11 to their classmates and instructors. A special seminar has been scheduled for Tuesday morning, Nov. 13. Any veteran in our area is encouraged to participate in this weeklong ceremony and may obtain additional information bv calling the high school at 987-8575. We encourage you to attend if possible.
The Shenandoah National Park is also conducting a special Veterans' Day weekend commemoration and has announced that all entrance fees to national park areas will be waived during the weekend, Nov. 10, 11 and 12, to encourage Americans to seek solace and inspiration in the nation’s parks, monuments and memorials. Officials invite residents to visit the parks in the spirit of unity, hope and healing during this Veterans’ Day weekend. As with any holiday weekend, we can expect increased traffic. The Division of Motor Vehicles encourages all motorists traveling during the holiday to prevent needless deaths and injuries by driving defensively and wearing safety belts. DMV encourages drivers to not only buckle up, but get plenty of rest, observe speed limits and keep their cool during the Veterans’ Day holiday weekend - as well as every time they get behind the wheel. Along with the public school officials, park officials, DMV and others, we encourage residents to remember what it means to be an American, remember our active military, our veterans, our firefighters and all who serve in various capacities at this time in our history.
