own hand, killing Titus sons and baking them in a pie to serve to Tamora at a feast. Titus then also kills his own daughter, Lavinia, because she is ruined. He also stabs Tamora to death. The Emperor kills Titus and his brother, and then Titus’s remaining sons kill the Emperor.
Lucius, Titus’ oply remaining son, becomes emperor, and then puts Aaron in a hole in the ground to die. He had promised to spare the illegitimate son of the Moor and Tamora, but now wants to kill him. In the one note of sanity in the whole ugly deal, young Lucius, the now-emperor’s son, takes the baby and flees. The closing scene of him carrying the child, walking out a Roman archway with the sun rising in the distance, provides powerful imagery.
So, although this is one of the original X-rated stories of life, it is a forceful classic which teaches compelling lessons. The film is magnificent and deserves and A+ as well, but Herb notes we have actually somewhat sugarcoated the brutality here. Bear this in mind, and don’t say we didn’t warn you.
