The day began with the sound of “Taps” played at the RCHS flagpole by Brian Lee and Brian Taylor as the flag was raised by John Ferdetta and saluted by Holly Long and Wendy Oillis.
This was the first activity in a morning filled with information, emotion, and patriotism as the students and staff of Rappahannock County High School celebrated Veterans’ Appreciation Week with a group of very special members of our community.
A program entitled “The Price of Freedom” provided a forum for United States military veterans to discuss the pursuit of freedom on both the individual and national levels of experience. Mrs. Patti Waddell, high school biology teacher, sang “Fallen but Not Forgotten” to begin the morning’s activities.
Col. (Ret.) Nels Parson served as moderator for the event setting the tone for the assembly with the reminder to all present, of their obligation to “support and defend the Constitution* as a citizen of this nation. Col. Parson then introduced the four freedoms from the 1941 speech of President Franklin D. Roosevelt: freedom of speech and expression, freedom to worship God ill one’s ewn way, freedom from want, and freedom from fear.
