Coyotes have two howling seasons. The first is in January and February. During this time they are trying to find a mate by howling. The second season is in September and October. During this period the female is calling to her offspring. The young then call back in unison. This will result in the familiar chorus heard at night in the West. This calling is becoming increasingly familiar in the East as the Coyote grows in number here.
After the move westward by settlers, Coyotes thrived on ranchers’ cattle and sheep. In response, the ranchers aggressively tried to eliminate the Coyote, and almost succeeded. Then, in the 1970s and 1980s, Coyote pelts became quite valuable.
However, there has been little demand for them since the collapse of the fur industry.
