While the grieving process takes a year or less, the circumstances of death greatly influence the course of bereavement. Sudden, unexpected death makes grieving more severe and difficult to manage. Grief may be less intense after a prolonged illness because there is time to reconcile to the impending death and say farewell. The death of a very old person after u long productive life is rarely mourned as intensely as the death of u child, which causes more emotional stress than even the loss of a spouse. The bereaved should he encouraged to talk about the departed loved one. This is especially true of bereaved parents, who often fear the child’s too-brief life will be forgotten.

For some, grief involves pulling away und finding solitude, while for others, it involves talking things out, but for most of us, both are necessary.
