Getting started
Using a needle, colorful yams or heavy threads, a predrawn design or one of your own, you can create a beautiful and lasting piece of artwork. It can be very rewarding to watch these tiny stitches turn into something decorative and useful.
For a needlepoint project, use a good quality, strong canvas with an even weave (square meshes). It should be somewhat stiff.
There are two types of needlepoint canvas: single mesh and double mesh. The former has single, evenlyspaced threads running in both directions (crosswise and lengthwise). Double mesh is woven with double threads instead of single, leaving evenly spaced square meshes for the needle to work through.
Specially made yams for needlepoint have enough body to cover the meshes, and come in a wide variety of colors. When purchasing your yam make sure that you have enough of one dye lot to complete the piece.
Needlepoint requires a tapestry needle, a blunt needle with an elongated eye large enough to let the thread slide through easily.
The main needlepoint stitches are petit point or gros point. They are the same stitch, differing only in size. They can be used in a variety of patterns.
The piece will look more uniform if you develop a consistent rhythm.
