Inis allows the producer to sell high quality wines even in years when the general quality of the grapes is sub-standard. I asked Gary Amato who, with his wife Cathy, own The Grapevine wine shop in Warrenton if he had any favorite NV’s. He named three.
His favorite is Moet & Chandon, which he praises for its consistency and ability to go well with food. A less expensive, but very high quality choice from California is Roederer Estate at $19.99 per bottle.
Roederer is a very old and highly esteemed Champagne house that set up operations for sparkling wine in California. Finally, the bargain in this category, according to Gary, is Gruet NV. The Gruet brothers own a winery in Champagne also, but, unlike Roederer, couldn’t afford the high real estate prices in California. Instead, they bought land in Albuquerque, N.M. (yes, you read that right...New Mexico) and made a terrific Brut NV for $13.99.
The second category includes Vintage sparklers. These are wines made from a single year. Since variations in micro-climate can make huge differences in grape quality, it is up to the winery to decide whether a particular year is a vintage quality.
