As a matter of purely personal preference, I’ve never had a better champagne than Pol Roger’s Cuvee Winston Churchill. Pol Roger was Churchill’s favorite champagne and, upon his death, the Pol Roger house put a black border around its label. (This should give you some idea of how much of the stuff Winnie drank.)
Later, they memorialized his devotion to their wine by issuing a Prestige Cuvee bearing his name and likeness. Like Winston, it’s a big, dramatic wine. Very bold, not subtle, but it is absolutely satisfying. At more than $140 a bottle for the 1990, it should be. Buy only for your very closest friends.
It should be noted that Prestige Cuvee’s are difficult to find since the supply is so limited. Though I always prefer buying locally and rely on the shop owner’s knowledge for recommendations, www.wine.com provides an excellent selection also. If you are looking for something specific, it’s a good place to go.
