Farfelu Vineyards is an original. Established in 1967 by former Naval aviator, CJ Raney, Farfelu is the Old Dominion’s first licensed winery.
Chuck Raney’s passion for wine grew during his several tours through the Mediterranean, where he discovered that good wine makes even simple foods delicious. Upon his retirement from the Navy, Chuck Raney planted his vineyard in the foothills of the Blue Ridge, flanking the rolling hills of the Rappahannock River.
He named it Farfelu, an ^apcient French word, meaning ^ecentric. Mr. Raney knew he 'could be considered eccentric, in frying to grow successful wine ;grapes, when Virginia’s own Thomas Jefferson had failed. ’ Chuck Raney showed the way ef fine wine for 24 years. Now -Farfelu Vineyards is open with •expanded, renovated facilities, Inew wines and new owners, ;Caroline Michael Osborne and ■John Osborne. They continue to ■create one of a kind wines in the Farfelu tradition.
For the public, Farfelu Vineyards features wine tasting in vthe rustic tasting room, a picnic tp£vilion, and a rambling two-mile dyer walk. ; On Saturday, Nov. 17 Farfelu Vineyards celebrated 25 years of fine wine making with an open house. Roaming musicians - •fiddlers, mandolin players and an .‘accordionist - serenaded wine '.lovers as they tasted Farfelu Vineyards’ artisan wines and §ayor seasonal appetizers.
