Recalling early Flint Hill history, there is an interesting note that in 1735 Thomas Chester was instrumental in petitioning the Orange County Court “for a road from the fork of Shenandoe to the upper end of the road by Col. Beverly’s quarters.”
A year later he started the operation of a ferry across the Shenandoah River in an area which is now in Front Royal. Chesters Road was completed linking Chesters Ferry on the Shenandoah River through Chester’s Gap on the mountain and down into Culpeper.
The book, “A Journey Through Flint Hill” goes on to say that the “pike,” also known as “Falmouth Road or Richmond Road,” w^s the main road through Flint Hill from “Gaines Crossroads” (now Ben Venue).
The 17 mile “pike” from “Gaines Crossroads” to Front Royal was started in 1850 and completed in 1852. There were two toll houses on this stretch of road in our area, one being at the present “Toll Gate Farm” on Route 729 and the other in Flint Hill across from the present Flint Hill Square.
