In her searches, she found the U. S. Department of State’s web site offering tips for Business Travelers to Nigeria, travel.stage.gov wliich stated: “Caution, therefore, should be exercised when contemplating any business deal in Nigeria. Scams range from attempts to engage American businesspeople in fictitious money-transfer schemes to fraudulent solicitations to supply goods in fulfillment of nonexistent Nigerian government contracts.” The site also described several standard schemes, many of which involved fraudulent cashier’s checks.
Travel.state.gov listed the phone number for the Nigeria Desk Officer at the International Trade Administration with the Department of Commerce, who informed Longyear about the range of Nigerian scams that begin with a wide net cast over the Internet.
“They’re doing a bunch of small towns,” Longyear said.
