(Cingular and AT&T used to operate on TDMA (Time Envision Multiple Access) format but they are moving rapidly to GSM where I believe T-Mobile has been all along.) Users from these three companies have the capability of “roaming” on each other’s networks. Cell phones from these three companies CANNOT “roam” on Sprint or Verizon networks because of the difference in formats.

“Therefore, a Cingular user like me will receive absolutely no benefit from the Sprint towers in the county,” wrote Hickman. “Same goes for AT&T (fast merging with Cingular) and T-Mobile. Verizon users may ‘roam’ on the new towers, providing their phones and calling plans allow for it—that is, it is technologically possible.”
