Last week I had an unfortunate
encounter with a member of the Rappahannock County sheriff’s department.
I was taking my kids to the elementary school and arrived 8:25 a.m. Since school had already started, I thought it was okay to pull into the bus lane and drop them off at the curb. There was only one bus in the lane at the far end with no lights on and no stop sign, so I thought that this bus was done unloading and was getting ready to pull out.
I realized that it was still too early to be in the bus lane when I was approached by a gentleman wearing a crossing guard vest. I apologized for making the error but was too committed to turn around. He agreed, was very kind, and directed me to pull forward and go park in the parking lot to drop off my kids.
So, I proceeded forward at 10 mph, let two kids cross the crosswalk, passed the bus (with no lights, and no stop sign) and was then approached by this member of law enforcement.
