As the holidays approach, many local families plan to gather around their tables and enjoy home-cooked feasts together.

The Health Department wants to make sure careful cooks use strict rules in the kitchen when preparing and serving meals to help prevent food-borne illnesses, such as Salmonella and E. cob.

“Proper handling and cooking of foods is the key to preventing illness at this festive, hectic time of year, as well as all year long,” said Lilian Peake, M.D., M.P.H., Health Director for the Rappahannock-Rapidan Health District.

“Paying close attention to how we prepare foods, especially in a busy, crowded kitchen, will help all of us enjoy Thanksgiving Day to our fullest,” said Dr. Peake.
