Farmland protection
Also on the agenda — County Administrator John McCarthy spoke about a Farmland Preservation Program which is in effect in Rappahannock County.
A Farmland Preservation Committee— comprised of Alvin Henry, Monira Rifaat, Bryant Lee, Charlie Sher, Phil Irwin and McCarthy—is currently taking applications from farmers who would like to have the county purchase rights to their property in an attempt to preventaevelopment and preserve productive farmland.
Rappahannock County would negotiate with the landowners to retain full ownership of the land, but they would not be allowed to break up the property for development.
At this time, there is $105,000 available to purchase the rights to land totaling 100150 acres.
Any farm landowners interested in this proposal should contact the Farmland Preservation Committee.
