Many others in the gathering agreed that learning from those who have given easements is in fact the best method of gaining knowledge and finding if this would be beneficial to a landowner.

One of the factors that must be looked at is the size of the land for which the easement is sought. According to Dennis, the VOF does prefer the acreage to be greater than 50, but if property is less than 50 acres and is scenic, the foundation will look at it.

Of great concern among the group was how invasive is this process for the future of the land holding?

Phil Irwin offered that while he has had an easement for just over 30 years, it was not until approximately 10 years ago that the holder of his easement came to check how his land was being used.
