Kent Hickman of Castleton provided information on Rappnet that he read in the February issue of Consumer Reports. The following is a paraphrased version that Hickman has prepared from his understanding of the article:
“There is more than one cell phone network or system. Some cell phone companies use one network, others use a totally different one.
“For example, Sprint uses the CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) format. Verizon wireless also uses CDMA. Verizon can “roam’ on the Sprint network and Sprint can ‘roam’ on the Verizon network because they both use the CDMA format.
“On the other hand, Cingular, AT&T wireless and T-Mobile all operate on GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) format.
