I kept asking him if the bus didn’t have its lights on, how was I supposed to know if it was unloading children? I didn’t want to be ignorantly endangering the children if the bus wasn’t required to have its lights on in the bus lane. He wouldn’t answer me, and told me, “This conversation is over!”
I did some checking with the State Board as well as the local School Board to clear up this issue for my own peace of mind. When buses are just sitting in the lane, they are not required to have their lights on, but any time they are loading or unloading children, they are required to have their lights on.
You should be able to assume that if a bus does not have their lights on, they are not loading or unloading children and it should be okay to pass.
I am not too proud to admit that I was partially to blame here, I know it, I apologize for it and have learned a lot from this valuable lesson. I appreciate all the wonderful work that all the officers in this county do to keep us and our children safe, but this one officer needs some work on
