Virginia has 28 recognized foxhunting dubs. Many more so-called “farmer packs” and night-hunting hounds add to the foxhunting population. By comparison, the next
J'Tnost” dubs are in North Carolina, 10. Maryland has " nine dubs; Pennsylvania has nine as well. !* At last count there were 55 masters in Virginia of Masters of Foxhounds Association recognized packs. • Each recognized pack owns between 40-100 hounds. Most packs have 20-200 subscribing “members.” Nearly every member owns one or more horses. Each dub has a professional huntsman (though some masters also serve as “amateur" huntsman.) Each club employs two to four whippers-in, or assistants. • The Virginia Foxhound Club, formed in 1934, led the fight to defeat a proposed fee of $100 above the normal dog tag cost for breeding dogs. As a 40-hound pack would have owed the state J -$4,000 in fees; that bill alone would have crippled Virginia’s hunting industry. • The VFC also helped
